Rainbows // Where Science x Art meet [video]
Is it crazy to know that the phenomenon we love so much, that brings us so much joy when we do get a glimpse. A rainbow is not actually the way our eyes perceive it. The half-circle arch of a rainbow is a complete lie. When you’re standing on the ground looking up at a rainbow in the sky, the curvature of the Earth usually blocks its bottom half. Viewed from a higher vantage point, like from a plane, hot air balloon or in this case a crane, rainbows are magically revealed to be a complete circle.
The video above was captured by a crane operator working on the 1,500+ foot tall Lakhta Center skyscraper in St Petersburg, Russia. While on the crane some genius who is not cited in the source (typical..rolling eyes emoji) filmed the entire circumference of the gorgeous wonder we revere, which ends up looking more like a gateway to another stratosphere, rather than sunlight simply being reflected from inside rain drops. Pilots have to know this...but I've never heard this documented which was interesting because as an artist the rainbow has always fascinated me even more than pantone but I digress. This could be used as a life metaphor or at the very least a fun fact that will make you the hit at any event. Tell em Forever Fly put you on game or just thank me later (drake voice).
